The Nevada Judicial Discipline Commission has publicly censured former Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Tony Abbatangelo and prohibited him from seeking judicial office for the next four years.

The unanimous order, issued Wednesday and signed by commission chairman Douglas Jones, mirrors a stipulated agreement Abbatangelo reached with the commission March 9 to avoid a formal statement of charges and a contested hearing.

Abbatangelo agreed he had violated the Nevada Code of Judicial Conduct for a misdemeanor domestic battery conviction he received in connection with a 2008 incident at his home involving his wife at the time. He pleaded no contest the following year and he and his wife eventually divorced.

Abbatangelo, who had been on the bench since 1993, lost his bid for re-election in November to Janiece Marshall. He then went into private practice.
