It’s clear Dana White has done an amazing job bringing the UFC out of obscurity in such a short time. However, his comments following the inaugural fight on Fox TV would indicate he lacks the public relations skills required for his position.
As the commissioner of an organization attempting to increase the exposure of its sport and attract new fans, his response to complaints raised by the media and those same fans regarding the “64-second fight” were questionable at best. One of a commissioner’s duties is to display patience, leadership and understanding — in other words, to be the adult in the room when times are tough. Mr. White’s response of “Shut up, seriously, shut up, I don’t even want to hear it” hardly places him in that category. Can you imagine how unsuccessful NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NBA Commissioner David Stern would have been in their union negotiations had they acted this way?
Seriously, Mr. White, we expected more.
