D.J. Pumphrey rushed for more than 250 yards as Canyon Springs shrugged off a lackadaisical first half to beat Rancho 26-6.

The Pioneers made multiple mistakes in the opening 24 minutes and turned the ball over continually. They only led 6-0 at halftime.

“The defense held us together,” Canyon Springs coach Hunkie Cooper said. “The defense has played well enough to be undefeated. They’ve played good all year.”

Rayshawn Henderson and Stephon Revels led the defense. Henderson clogged the middle, while Revels came up with an interception and fumble recovery.

The offense came around a little more in the second half, but Cooper said he was still looking for improvement. The Pioneers are continuing to jell with a number of sophomores playing significant roles.

“We’ve got to be able to get the ball to our athletes in space,” Cooper said. “We haven’t been able to do that yet.”
