Letter to the editor:

Don’t take judicial review lightly

Regarding Bob Jack’s Thursday letter, headlined “Immigration law unjustly blocked”:

Judicial review is a huge responsibility and should not be taken lightly nor should it be done in knee-jerk fashion. It requires thought, research and time to decide whether a law protects or denies constitutional rights.

Mr. Jack states that “it is egregious that a state would be blocked from protecting its legal citizens and financial survival by a federal judge.” Isn’t that precisely what judicial review is intended to ensure?

Mr. Jack goes on to criticize the federal government of “allowing criminal behavior to go unstopped.” The fact of the matter is that the Obama administration has deported more illegal immigrants, most with criminal records, in the past two years than the previous administration did in its last two years.

The judge promised a ruling in September. I support the judge’s decision to take a careful look at the Alabama law and publish an opinion that is constitutionally sound.
