Clark County GOP ditches staggered start times; caucuses will begin at 9 a.m.

Realizing that staggered start times could lead to even more voter confusion on caucus day, Clark County Republicans have settled on a uniform start time of 9 a.m. for the Feb. 4 presidential caucuses.

Worried about overcrowded caucuses sites, Clark County Republicans had hoped to stagger the start times by precinct, meaning some precincts would start at 9 a.m., some at 11 a.m. and some at 1 p.m.

Unlike a primary election, caucus-goers must participate in a precinct meeting to listen to candidate speeches, cast their vote in the presidential poll and elect delegates to the county convention. The process often takes a couple of hours.

The staggered start times, however, led to serious concerns about disenfranchising voters, with some leading Republicans worried about lawsuits if the presidential candidates saw an uneven playing field.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that many precincts throughout the valley have been renumbered or redrawn because of redistricting. Caucus-goers must know which precinct they live in and where their precinct will be meeting on Feb. 4 in order to participate in the caucuses.

“We’re just going to do a single session,” Clark County Chairman David Gibbs said. “All sessions will start at 9 a.m.”

Some Republicans continue to worry about the caucuses conflicting with religious services. Clark County Republicans have a meeting tonight to discuss arrangements to accommodate those who must attend synagogue or other services on Saturday morning, Gibbs said.
