CARSON CITY — Fifteen people have applied to replace state Superintendent of Public Instruction Keith Rheault, who is retiring after eight years on the job and 27 years with the state Department of Education.

The deadline to apply was Friday. The names of the applicants are not being released.

Eight are from Nevada and the others from out of state. Of the 15, three did not meet the requirement of having a master’s degree in education or school administration.

Later this month, the list will be narrowed to five or six candidates, whose names will be released, said Dale Erquiaga, senior advisor to Gov. Brian Sandoval.

The superintendent will be appointed by the governor from three nominees chosen by the state Board of Education.

The job pays up to $121,785 and includes a retirement plan, paid health, vision, dental, life and disability insurance, 11 paid holidays and paid sick and annual leave.

The board is expected to make its nominations in February, and Sandoval will name Rheault’s replacement in March.
