Las Vegas temperatures to climb close to 70-degree mark

Forecasters say afternoon temperature to tie old record of 68 degrees for this date

If you like your winters warm, you’ll like this week — temperatures are expected to climb to near-record afternoon highs again today, says Kevin Janison, KSNV-TV meteorologist.

The National Weather Service is saying today's high could hit 68 degrees, which would tie the record for today's date.

"I don’t know about you, but I prefer this week not being normal," Janison said.

Janison said a strong area of high pressure has entrenched itself in the region, "acting as a shield to any wannabe weather disturbances aiming to visit Nevada."

The mild temperatures — Tuesday’s high was 10 degrees above normal and missing the record by one degree — will continue through at least Friday, he said.

This morning's lows will be in the 40s and climb again into the mid to upper 60s in the afternoon, he said.

"There are some hints of a pattern hiccup late in the weekend, but the forecast models are contradicting each other, so confidence is moderate," he said. "But … we do believe Sunday could get breezy, and temps will return to normal by then."

According to the weather service, this morning’s low at McCarran International Airport was expected to be 43 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 39 degrees. The record low was 14 degrees, set in 1970 and 1950.

Temperatures at McCarran were to rise today to 52 degrees by 9 a.m., to 62 degrees by noon and reach a high of 68 degrees by 3 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 57 degrees and the record high was 68 degrees, set in 2007.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 60 degrees by 6 p.m., to 52 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 49 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Thursday's morning low will be 44 degrees and Thursday's high will climb to 66 degrees, they said.
