Letter to the editor:

No reward for lower consumption

In 2011, the United States became a net fuel exporter for the first time in 62 years. Why? Because of greater energy efficiency. The Department of Energy projects declining per-capita energy consumption through 2035. We are now a significant worldwide supplier to other markets. Will the oil companies reward us for leaving the gas guzzlers in the garage, switching to CFL bulbs, leaving the furnace below 68 degrees and the air conditioner at 90 degrees? It will not happen.

The greedy companies are selling oil to the highest bidders while our economy languishes in the gutter. For those out there who have been waging a war against the fundamentals of reducing energy consumption, the environmentalists won and the oil companies are profiting from it, and you gain nothing but a cleaner nation for your children.
