Las Vegas City Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow is organizing a free family festival and car show in honor of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. later this month.

The first annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Fest will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Jan. 16 at Edmond Town Center, 1061 W. Owens Ave., which is at H Street and Owens Avenue.

The Dream Fest is part of the annual King Week festivities, which includes a downtown parade that starts at 10 a.m. Jan. 16 and runs along Fourth Street, from Hoover to Stewart streets.

The Dream Fest will also include a chili cook-off and family-related entertainment and activities.

Vendors, car enthusiasts and chili cookers interested in participating should visit the Dream Fest website at www.lasvegasnevada.gov/mlkdreamfest to print out an application form.

The website also has details on where the form can be mailed and how to pay any associated fees. Forms and payments must be turned in to the address listed on the application.

Barlow is also seeking volunteers to assist with setting up and breaking down the event. Those interested can contact him at 702-229-5443.
