Firefighters put out blazes at 2 vacant homes

Las Vegas firefighters put out a blaze at an apartment building today near downtown that caused an estimated $25,000 damage.

It was the second fire Friday at a vacant home. Another blaze in the west valley caused at least $30,000 damage, county fire officials said.

City firefighters responded to a four-unit apartment near Eastern and Stewart avenues that caught fire shortly before 4 p.m., Las Vegas Fire & Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

The fire was put out within minutes after crews arrived at the apartment at 2805 Stewart Ave., he said.

The blaze was contained to an upstairs bedroom of a vacant unit that had been boarded up, Szymanski said.

No injuries were reported, and the American Red Cross is assisting two adults, three children and a dog in the apartments next to the unit that caught fire, he said.

County firefighters, meanwhile, responded about 9:20 a.m. to a home with flames and smoke coming from the second story in the 5400 block of Sandpiper Lane, near Desert Inn Road and Decatur Boulevard, officials said.

The fire appeared to start in a bedroom and spread into a hallway, officials said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Neighbors reported that the home had been vacant for several months and had been used by vagrants, the fire department said.

Metro Police are investigating reports that vagrants may have been in the house within the last 24 hours, officials said.

The fire department estimated damage at between $30,000 and $50,000.
