A fire at an apartment complex started by food left cooking on the stove has resulted in $25,000 in damages and the death of one family's poodle.

No people were injured in the Saturday fire, which occurred at the Sundance Village Apartments, 6500 W. Charleston Blvd.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue firefighters responded to the blaze at 2:43 p.m. and found one of the lower units in the complex engulfed with flames, according to a statement from the fire department.

Investigators ruled the fire accidental and say it started when food was left cooking on the stove unattended.

The kitchen and living room had substantial damage, with further smoke and heat damage throughout the unit, according to the statement.

Only one person was home at the time of the accident, but a total of three adults and one teenager share the apartment. The family has been moved to another vacant unit in the complex and is being assisted by the Red Cross, the fire department said.

Firefighters found the family's pet poodle in one of the bedrooms dead from apparent smoke inhalation.

According to the fire department, cooking fires are the leading cause of fires and fire-related injuries in Las Vegas.
