Finalists for Clark County district attorney named

A screening committee narrowed the pool of seven applicants Friday night to three local lawyers who have a chance at being named Clark County district attorney.

Drew Christensen, the county's director of appointed counsel, John Hunt, former chairman of the Clark County Democratic Party, and Las Vegas Councilman Steve Wolfson were selected as finalists by a seven–member panel appointed by County Manager Don Burnette, according to county officials.

The three finalists are applying to be the county’s top prosecutor, overseeing, in essence, the state’s largest law firm and managing a $65 million budget.

The seven lawyers who made up the committee finished interviewing the applicants before choosing the finalists, one of whom will fulfill the three years left on David Roger’s term, officials said. Roger retired Jan. 3 after being elected in the fall of 2010.

The County Commission’s Jan. 17 meeting agenda will include an item to hear from the finalists who have been asked to make presentations and answer questions during the public meeting, officials said. County Commission Chairwoman Susan Brager said she would ask the board to assemble for a special meeting the week of Jan. 23 to select the new district attorney.

“We had outstanding attorneys apply for this position, and deciding upon the finalists was not an easy task,” said David Wall, who served as screening committee chairman in the selection process.

Among the other applicants vying for the position were Don Chairez, Teresa Lowry-Childs, Robert Langford and Patrick Ferguson, officials said.
