Neurologist to pay $1 million to settle Medicare fraud case

A Las Vegas neurologist has agreed to pay a settlement of about $1 million to resolve an alleged heath care fraud case.

Dr. Gobinder Chopra, who owns and operates G.S. Chopra M.D., Chartered, opted to settle with the U.S. Justice Department to resolve civil allegations of falsely billing the Medicare program, according to the office of Daniel Bogden, U.S. attorney for Nevada.

The agreement, effective Dec. 21, 2011, states that Chopra will pay $1,004,528 over a five-year period, according to Bogden’s office.

The settlement resolves allegations that Chopra improperly billed Medicare for critical-care codes in instances of noncritical-care services from Aug. 1, 2004, to May 31, 2010. The settlement is neither an admission of liability by Chopra nor recognition by federal authorities that their claims were not well founded.

The case was investigated by the inspector general’s office for the Department of Health and Human Services. Roger Wenthe, assistant U.S. attorney, handled the case on behalf of the U.S. attorney’s office.
