Computer glitch causing delay in unemployment checks fixed

CARSON CITY — An error in the state’s computer that caused unemployment claims to be rejected for an undetermined number of jobless people has been fixed, officials said.

The state Department of Unemployment, Training and Rehabilitation said the staff worked through Tuesday night to fix the glitch. But some of the unemployed may get their payments two days late, officials said.

“We understand the magnitude of this situation as so many depend on unemployment benefits for their livelihood during this tough economic climate,” Department Director Frank Woodbeck said.

A five-year overhaul in under way on 30-year-old computer technology “that unfortunately doesn’t function well 100 percent of the times,” he said.

He is asking the jobless, whose claims were rejected, to refile online at expressclaim.org, where up-to-date information will be posted.

The telephone call center will still accept calls. But people may face long hold times because of the call volume.
