Resident displaced by downtown Las Vegas apartment fire

Downtown fire

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue extinguished a blaze Wednesday evening that gutted a downtown area apartment.

When firefighters arrived around 6 p.m. they found flames were jetting out the front window and doors of the one-story apartment at 2200 Sunrise Avenue, said Timothy Szymanski, fire department spokesman.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported, he said.

The fire caused $25,000 in damage and displaced the woman who lived there, Szymanski said.

The American Red Cross also assisted four adults and five children who lived in the apartment next to the one that caught fire, he said.

The fire appears to be accidental and careless smoking could not be ruled out as a cause, but the incident is still under investigation, Szymanski said.
