Letter to the editor:

Spin is hiding the raw facts

The Robert S. Tobias letter to the editor blaming the Obama administration for accountability of the national debt is based on conjecture rather than fact. The facts are these: When President George Bush took office in 2001, the national debt was

$5.6 trillion. His 2009 budget, which President Barack Obama inherited, reflected an $11.9 trillion national debt, more than doubling the debt he started with. The current national debt is about $15 trillion.

History will show that the Democratic Party is more inclined to spend federal money than is the Republican Party. The argument always concerns how much and on which projects our tax money is spent. For the electorate to make well-considered judgments for voting purposes, it must consider raw facts, not spun facts.

The Republican Party is spinning the national debt numbers mercilessly. Joe Friday had the term that applies: “All we want are the facts, ma’am.”
