Letter to the editor:

‘Smart’ meters a dumb idea

Regarding so-called “smart meters”: Why is no one addressing the fact that NV Energy or some employee will be able to shut off my power at any time, rightly so or not? This is not the same as having someone knock on your door first and allow you a chance to correct an error. I have no doubt Nevada Powerful will minimize the possibility of this happening.

Another issue is those who are home 24/7 — seniors, etc. — cannot turn the air conditioning way down during peak hours. So who pays more? Those who least can afford it. But NV Energy’s savings will ensure executives’ bonuses, thus allowing them to run their air conditioning units.

Why has the fact been lost that these corporations are “franchised,” given exclusivity, in the best interest of the people they are intended to serve? I agree with comments regarding the indifference to the people by those who are supposed to be protecting us. It is hard not to go on and on.

I guess this time next year I will have a “smart meter.” Thank you Public Users Commission. (You thought PUC meant something else.)
