Less than a month ago, Rep. Joe Heck criticized the Senate for kicking the can down the road when it passed a temporary two-month extension of the payroll tax holiday and unemployment insurance. He stated that Congress should work through the Christmas holiday to pass a full one-year extension (kicking the can further down the road). He said Congress could use the two months better by debating job-creating ideas. A great idea.
But imagine my surprise when I opened the local newspaper a week ago and read that Rep. Heck was leaving on a one-week fact-finding trip to Israel. I read through the article, curious as to what job-creating ideas Mr. Heck expected to learn from the Israelis. None mentioned.
According to Mr. Heck, the purpose of his trip was to “discuss the quest for a practical and workable peace settlement in the region.” I always thought that was the job of secretary of state and presidents, not lowly congressmen.
As a constituent of Mr. Heck, I would rather Mr. Heck stay in Washington and discuss the quest for a practical and workable peace settlement between Republicans and Democrats, instead of Israelis and Palestinians. That is unless Mr. Heck feels that there is a less chance of the former than the latter.
