Accident site

A 56-year-old man is in critical condition after being hit by a minivan today while he was jaywalking across Rancho Drive south of Lake Mead Boulevard.

Metro Police responded to the scene at 11:12 a.m. where a 2010 Chrysler Town & Country driven by John Andres, 78, of Okeechobee, Fla., had struck a pedestrian.

Witnesses told police that the man, later identified as Melton Ervin, 56, of Las Vegas, failed to use the crosswalk, police said.

Police said Ervin was walking into the street from behind the bus to cross Rancho Drive’s southbound lanes.

The Chrysler was traveling south in the left lane when the right front of the minivan struck Ervin, knocking him to the ground, police said.

Ervin was transported to University Medical Center Trauma with critical injuries, police said. The incident remains under investigation.
