Teen in serious condition after being hit by car

Updated Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012 | 11:12 p.m.

A teenage girl was in serious condition after being struck by a car today near Tropicana Avenue and Nellis Boulevard, Metro Police said.

A 14-year-old walking north across Tropicana Avenue was hit at about 3 p.m. by a white 2006 Nissan Altima traveling east on Tropicana Avenue, said Marcus Martin, a police spokesman.

Witnesses told police the girl was not in a crosswalk and was midway across the street when the driver of the Nissan, Joel Montano, 33, of Las Vegas, hit the brakes causing the car to skid, police said.

The Nissan rotated and slid onto the center median before the rear end of the car struck the girl, police said.

The teen was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, and the intersection was closed to traffic while police investigated, police said. No other injuries were reported.

Police are looking for the driver of another car that witnesses say was speeding on Tropicana to the right of the Nissan at the time of the collision but did not stop after the incident, police said. Anyone with information on the other car can call Metro’s traffic section at 828-3538 or Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.
