Letter to the editor:

Strident ideology sinking the GOP

A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The frog asks, “How do I know you won’t sting me?” The scorpion says, “Because if I do, I will die too.”

The frog is satisfied and they set out, but in midstream, the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of paralysis and starts to sink. Knowing they both will drown, he has just enough time to gasp “Why?”

Replies the scorpion: “It’s my nature...”

This adage describes exactly what has become of the Republican Party. They’ve become self destructive in attempting to win on points of ideology without compromise, in turn damaging the country and the democratic process. States with Republican majorities enacted sets of new laws, some of which strip away voters’ rights, attack women’s rights, disallow the working class to negotiate contracts and introduce a form of martial law, as in the case of Michigan.

The Republican presidential candidates and their debates exposed the mindset of these radicals. They cheered executions in Texas, screamed “Let him die!” in the case of having no health insurance, booed an active military member because he was gay, and applauded Newt Gingrich playing the “welfare queen” card by race baiting.

What happened to the party that produced great leaders such as Lincoln, Roosevelt and Reagan? This sure isn’t it.
