Letter to the editor:

Here’s a valiant Italian captain

Italy has been embarrassed by Francesco Schettino, captain of the cruise ship Costa Concordia, which sank in Italian waters. Capt. Schettino abandoned ship and refused to go back on the ship at the time of the sinking.

But not all captains in Italy are cowards, such as Capt. Piero Calamai, who was captain of the Andrea Doria, which sank in July 1956 after a collision with another ship in the high seas. Capt. Calamai made a decision to either save the ship or save the passengers. He chose the passengers.

He also was the last Italian officer to leave the ship after looking out for the safety of his passengers and crew. Perhaps the Italian government should use Capt. Calamai as an example of how a captain should react during situations like the sinking of a ship. Rest in peace Capt. Calamai.
