Valley firefighters battled blazes in two homes Wednesday and rescued an elderly woman from the first fire.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital for possible smoke inhalation after firefighters rescued her from a smoke-filled bedroom, said Timothy Szymanski, spokesman for Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

When the woman living at a home on the 1600 block of Barrel Cactus Court called for help, she told dispatchers she wasn’t able to get out of her home, he said.

Firefighters arrived on scene around 2:46 p.m. and found heavy smoke showing from the rear of the one-story house and the woman trying to leave the bedroom through a rear sliding glass door, Szymanski said.

Fire investigators believe the fire started on the bed, Szymanski said. The bedroom was gutted.

Investigators could not determine the exact cause of the fire, but it appears to be accidental, Szymanski said. Damage was estimated at $25,000.

A house near the Las Vegas Country Club at Sahara Avenue and Maryland Parkway also caught fire Wednesday.

Clark County fire crews responded around 10:40 p.m. to the scene on the 800 block of Vegas Valley Drive to a home on fire emitting heavy smoke, fire officials said.

Firefighters are working to contain the flames. No further details on that fire were immediately available.
