Cold front brings windy and cooler weather today to Las Vegas Valley

Some gusts could be as high as 35 mph, says forecaster

Get ready for some cooler temperatures and breezy conditions in the Las Vegas Valley today, says Kevin Janison, KSNV-TV meteorologist.

"In advance of a cold front, quite a pile of clouds passed through the Valley sky Thursday. It also fed an absolutely spectacular sunset!" Janison said.

Now the front is ready to do its business: lower the temperatures by a few degrees and kick up the wind, he said.

"Wind will already have started this morning, but the strongest gusts are expected between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.," Janison said. "Some of those gusts will be in the neighborhood of 35 mph."

The friction with the air molecules will keep the low in the upper 40s, and the afternoon high should reach 61 degrees, he said.

"But … with the wind blowing, 61 degrees won’t really feel that mild," he said.

Breezes could linger into Saturday, but the winds will relax by that afternoon, and the weekend should shape up quite nicely, Janison said.

The National Weather Service said this morning’s low at McCarran International Airport was expected to be 47 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 40 degrees. The record low was 12 degrees, set in 1937.

Temperatures at McCarran were to rise today to 52 degrees by 9 a.m., to 60 degrees by noon and reach a high of 61 degrees by 1 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 59 degrees and the record high was 73 degrees, set in 1971.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 54 degrees by 6 p.m., to 47 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 43 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Saturday's morning low will be 39 degrees and Saturday's high will climb to 60 degrees, they said.
