State medical board files complaints against weight loss clinic owner

CARSON CITY -- The state Board of Medical Examiners has filed a complaint against the owner of a Las Vegas weight loss clinic alleging the mishandling controlled substances and forging of records.

Angela Lorenzo, owner of Modern Medical and Weight Loss, has a physician's assistant license and is registered with the state Board of Pharmacy to dispense controlled substances.

In one complaint, the medical board accuses her of implanted a testosterone pellet in one patient and directing staff to create a fraudulent lab recorder and substitute the records of another patient to collect insurance.

In another complaint, 28 syringes of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, a controlled substance, were issued to a patient without Lorenzo examining the patient, while the medical record was signed by her, according to the complaint.

Yet another complaint states that claims to Altius Health Insurance were for treatments made in the Las Vegas office or at the home of the patient while Lorenzo and the patient were actually in Hawaii.

The board said Lorenzo shipped two bottles of phentermine to a patient in California after only a consult over the phone, which is against the law.

Lorenzo advertises her business as specializing in medical weight loss, wellness, nutritional analysis, hormone therapy, anti-aging treatment, Botox and wrinkle fillers. She has 20 days to answer the complaint and the board will decide later whether to hold a disciplinary hearing on her physician assistance's license, which she has held since 1993.
