Letter to the editor:

Knowing what the middle class is

With the recent Supreme Court decision upholding the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, I would like to note Sen. Dean Heller’s comment. He said, in part, the decision “is a blow to the middle class.” What country’s middle class is he talking about?

His remark makes me think back to 2008 when someone asked Sen. John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, what he thought the median annual income in the United States was. He said, “So, I think if you are just talking about income, how about $5 million?”

Starting in 2014 all Americans with an annual incomes exceeding $200,000 will pay a tax — a penalty — if they do not subscribe to a health care plan. The median annual income is not even half of $200,000.
