Letter to the editor:

No forgiveness for Hanoi Jane

The column by Karen Owen in Saturday’s Sun surely caught the eye of Vietnam veterans.

The picture of Hanoi Jane smiling as she, accompanied by the North Vietnamese gun crew, was sitting on a anti-aircraft gun near Hanoi in 1972 is certain to cause disgust in the eyes of all Vietnam veterans. That was just four years after the bloody Tet Offensive that took the lives of thousands of Vietnamese and Americans in 1968. I was in that country in 1968. It is logical thinking that the very gun Hanoi Jane displayed for all the world to see was responsible for the downing of American aircraft and the killing of American crews.

Now, it seems that Jane, now in her 70s, wants to say she is sorry. She wants consideration and forgiveness. Forget it! Her actions were not “mistakes.” Providing aid and comfort to the enemy during a time of war is an act of treason. She should have been held accountable then, now and forever.

Born of Hollywood royalty and daughter of Henry Fonda, Jane led a life of luxury. There would never be the call to duty, the call to protect and defend her country, for Jane.

What better way to show her distaste for America than by posing in a North Vietnamese helmet with a gun crew laughing? You may convince your Hollywood peers that you are sorry, that it’s the biggest mistake that you ever made. But one thing is for sure, you will never convince us. We all remember you.
