Michael Morton, shown at Nove Italiano at the Palms, is planning a new restaurant Downtown.

Las Vegas restaurateur Michael Morton, son of Morton’s steakhouses founder Arnie Morton and creator of Vegas venues including N9NE Steakhouse, Nove Italiano, Ghostbar and Rain nightclubs and La Cave at Wynn, is headed Downtown.

Morton and Tamares Properties, which owns several Downtown casinos and buildings, announced a planned collaboration for a Mexican restaurant at 106 6th Street, a space just off Fremont Street across from the El Cortez casino. Depending on which side of Las Vegas Boulevard you’re on, it may already be a big part of Fremont.

The new restaurant will combine Mexican food with American rock and “a sensory departure from reality.”

“Everything about this venue will be richer than reality; more vibrant colors, the sexy rhythm of the music, intensely powerful aromas and flavors from the food, and tequila with almost palpable essence,” Morton stated in a press release.

Tamares Las Vegas Properties is part of the Tamares Group, a privately owned investment company, and owns the Plaza and Las Vegas Club casinos, as well as the Fremont Street structure housing Beauty Bar, Don’t Tell Mama and Le Thai. The Morton restaurant project is on the corner of Fremont and 6th, behind the now-under-construction bar space planned to open as Commonwealth later this year.

The new restaurant is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2013.
