Letter to the editor:

Republicans have sabotaged economy

I know it is hard to believe, but there is strong evidence that Republican members of Congress have colluded to prevent the economy from growing in order to make President Barack Obama look bad and thus lose the election. Remember, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said, “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”

During recessions under the past three Republican presidents, Congress increased spending in the public sector to promote jobs for teachers, firefighters, police and other government employees, and increased infrastructure spending to encourage employment in the construction industries.

What can we see during the Obama administration? During the first two years when Democrats controlled both houses of Congress, the stimulus package was passed and public spending spiked. Since the 2010 midterm elections, when Republicans gained control of the House and decreased the Democratic majority in the Senate, essentially no jobs bills have been enacted to stimulate public-sector spending.

It seems clear that there can be little other conclusion than that the Republicans in Congress have decided it is more important to let the economy flounder, thus sinking Obama’s re-election chance, than it is to save the economy.
