The Rebels have new football helmets for the 2012 season. Changes include a stripe down the middle, a different color scheme on the block “UNLV” lettering and a darker overall color.

Boise State enters this season on top of the Mountain West.

The Broncos, who next year will play football in the Big East, are predicted to finish first and have the most preseason all-conference team selections, it was announced Tuesday at the Mountain West’s media days at the Cosmopolitan. The polls are selected by members of the media.

UNLV is predicted to finish ninth and joins New Mexico (10th) as the only teams without a player on the 25-man preseason team.

The Broncos received 27 of 30 first-place votes for a total of 296 points, a comfortable distance ahead of second-place UNR (244). The other first-place votes went to Fresno State (2) and San Diego State (1).

The conference’s new blood is represented well as UNR and Fresno State placed second and third, respectively, and Fresno State junior quarterback Derek Carr was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. His defensive counterpart is San Diego State senior defensive back Leon McFadden.

Last year, McFadden led the league in passes defended (17) and also had two interceptions. Playing in the Western Athletic Conference as a junior, Carr threw for 3,544 yards with 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Boise State senior return man Mitch Burroughs is the Special Teams Player of the Year. The Broncos placed five members on the preseason team. UNR and Colorado State each had four.

  1. Great news.

  2. what Mario replied I am shocked that you can profit $5937 in 4 weeks on the internet. did you look at this link >>>

  3. Boise picked to win is no surprise

    Rebel's 9th is horrible

  4. UNLV will be a big surprise. Hauck's team has grown and gotten older/bigger. You can't think that a team that starts freshman will be able to keep up with teams that have 5th year seniors. That's what we have had to deal with the last few years. Our team will show great improvement this year and we will surprise a lot of teams this year. Pick us 9th and we will surprise this league. Go REBELS!

  5. the cup is half full gentlemen. This just means anything other than finishing 10th will be at least meeting or exceeding expectations!

  6. Now that we are all in the same conference. Considering the fact that the conference refers to Nevada as Nevada. The NCAA recognizes Nevada as Nevada. Can't we stop the dumb games and call Nevada... Nevada. So lame Vegas media... so lame.

  7. If I was on this team, nothing would fire me up more than going out and proving everyone wrong! This team needs to realize that it is them against the world. In fact, sad to say, its them against this town. Use this as a way to get motivated, go out and play loose and just have fun!

Given that the Vegas papers have continued this "fine" tradition for years, even when both schools were in the Big West Conference, and even when Nevada was known as "Nevada-Reno", I doubt they'll get over their ego trips now.

  9. @vegaspackfan

They can call themselves whatever they want, but they are still UNR.

Type in on your browser and it takes you to UNLV. Type in on your browser and you get the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Any guesses what comes up when you type in

  10. Considering the website for UNR is I'll keep referring to UNR as UNR...

  11. Yawwwwwnnnn. Oh hum. These predictions will go down the drain when the Rebels beat the Golden Gophers.

  12. I guess you don't refer to the University of California, Berkeley as "Cal" since their address is Or the University of Nebraska, Lincoln as "Nebraska" since their address is I know it's hard for Las Vegans to seperate the scholastic name of a university and what the athletic teams are known as.

  13. Same song different day. We're not Reno we're Nevada. Most folks don't even know how to say Nevada. Me, I'd prefer Reno instead of Nevaaaaaada.

  14. Or Nevahhda.

  15. Not one Rebel player selected on the preseason team! That speaks VOLUMES! It is going to be another long season fans. I can see only one win this season, stick a fork in Hauck. He is done!

  16. then stay home, willy. I know I will be out for EVERY home game and will see the games that will be televised away. I bleed REBEL RED! Go REBELS!!

  17. We can make strides this year but the Quarterback play has to dramatically improve. Caleb stunk...Riely a JC transfer stunk. I pray that Nick Sherry can assert himself. I also wish they would play a 3-4 defense and get some people in position to make some plays.
I got my season tickets lets be competitive and no more f__kin blowouts! I want the 50k on campus stadium now Hauck do your job!
    Good luck Rebels

  18. I think that Hauck should focus on picking out suitcases for his departure.

He didn't have to start freshman and rearrange the O line his first year..... he chose to.

More sympathetic BS from the authors of the story..... goodbye Hauck.

    btw, FUNR

  19. I moved out to LV last July and started supporting the football program @ UNLV, noticed there were no City College of San Francisco (#1 JUCO program in the Country) players on the roster, so I emailed Coach Hauck to ask why?, his reply "Coach Rush and I are old friends. He will only send me guys who are of outstanding character and of strong moral fiber. BH
A month later I attended a fundraiser for City College football and mentioned this to Coach Rush and his reply was "Hauck doesn't even know were in San Francisco, has never called or sent an assistant here to speak to any of the players"

Hey Coach Hauck: Mapquest 50 Phelan Ave. San francisco CA when you want to stop the bleeding

  20. Hauck is in a bad position of needing to win now, and somehow still having too young of a team going into year 3 to even have a respectable chance. Perhaps if he didn't have so many guys defect/quit/transfer, and recruited some JCs and transfers to fill the immediate gaps, it wouldn't be so bad.

We ran 65% of the time last year, which is insane. And probably 80% of our passes were lateral screens. I don't think it's as much Herring's fault as it is the fault of a completely horrible gameplan that doesn't put our QB in a position to succeed. I don't see anything changing from last year where teams just lined up 9 and 10 guys in the box and blitzed everyone almost every play. They didn't respect our pass, we knew they didn't respect the pass, and we still couldn't do anything about it. Unless we get an answer for that, we will have problems beating NAU, let alone compete with teams like Minnesota. I have a feeling it's going to get real ugly this year, especially if we get housed by the Gophers in week 1 like I think we will.
