CARSON CITY — The state Transportation Board chose Rudy Malfabon, deputy director of the state Department of Transportation for Southern Nevada, to succeed Susan Martinovich as director of the agency.
Martinovich is retiring Sept. 5 from the job overseeing 1,800 employees.
Breaking with tradition, the board conducted more than six hours of open interviews with four finalists before unanimously selecting Malfabon. The job pays a maximum of $124,528.
Malfabon has worked for the department for 24 years and has been deputy director in Southern Nevada since 2003.
