Murder charges filed in Sunday shooting outside of bar

The suspect in a fatal shooting early Sunday outside a northern valley bar has been charged with murder and attempted murder.

The Clark County District Attorney’s Office filed the charges Tuesday in Las Vegas Justice Court against Brenton E. Smith, 45, Henderson.

Smith is suspected of shooting Oliver Hooker, 43, outside the Seven Seas Bar, 808 W. Lake Mead Blvd., after an argument inside the bar escalated.

Witnesses told police that when the two left the bar about 1:30 a.m., Hooker punched Smith in the face, according to a Metro Police arrest report released Wednesday. A dazed Smith then pulled out a gun, prompting Hooker to push down Smith and start running. Smith, witnesses told police, fired several shots at Hooker. One shot hit Hooker in the left thigh, and he collapsed in the parking lot of True Love Baptist Church, 1941 H St.

According to the report, the bar’s security guard flagged down a Metro Police patrol vehicle after seeing Smith fire. With the guard’s assistance, the Metro Police officer took Smith into custody and retrieved his firearm.

Hooker was taken to University Medical Center Trauma Center with critical injuries. He died at 9:36 a.m.

Smith is jailed at the Clark County Detention Center on $250,000 bail. His arraignment is scheduled for 8 a.m. Aug. 1.
