Sheriff’s officials in Yavapai County, Ariz., arrested Troy White, who is suspected of shooting two people, one of them fatally, late Friday morning in a western Las Vegas Valley home, Metro Police officials said. The deceased woman's 9-year-old son reported the shootings to a neighbor, who called 911.

Dispatch received the call at 11:50 a.m. reporting the shooting of the mother and a male family friend, Metro spokesman Marcus Martin said. The incident happened in the 300 block of Altamira Road, a residential area south of Summerlin Parkway. The shooter, believed to be White, 44, had fled the area armed with a semi-automatic handgun in a silver Dodge Durango by the time officers arrived, officials said.

After Metro Police identified White as the suspect, he surrendered to the sheriff’s deputy in Arizona.

The two victims were transported to University Medical Center, where the mother, who had suffered a bullet wound to her upper chest, was pronounced dead, said Metro spokesman Jose Hernandez. The male shooting victim was in stable condition, Hernandez added.

Metro initially reported the shooter was the father of the 9-year-old, but later Hernandez backed away from that statement, saying authorities were not discussing the relationship between the shooter and the victims.

Hernandez said there were five children, ranging in age from 6 months to 9 years old, in the house at the time of the shooting. Outside of the 9-year-old son, it was not immediately clear what the relationship of the other children to the shooting victims or the suspect. Child Protective Services officials were on the scene to care for the children in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

Shawn McDonald, 27, who also lives on Altamira Road, said neighbors told him they saw the suspect pacing back and forth outside the home before officers arrived.

“They’ve been here a while,” he said, adding that the family kept to itself.

Authorities ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.

CORRECTION: Since giving its initial report, Metro has clarified that the 911 call was made by the neighbor, not the boy, and that the boy's age is 9. | (July 27, 2012)
