State to accept credit, debit cards for child support payments

Non-custodial parents can now make child support payments to families on state welfare using debit and credit cards and electronic transfers. The state Board of Finance approved the Division of Welfare and Supportive Services' plan this morning.

Marci Boggs, chief of collections in the division, told the finance board that it collected $198 million in child support last year. It now accepts only cashier checks and money orders.

Boggs said she expects payments to increase because of the new payment methods.

The supporting parent sends the money to the division that gives it to the family.

At present, the welfare office in Las Vegas offers a service where a non-custodial parent can come in and swipe his or her card and the payment goes through to the division.

This method will be more convenient for the supporting parent and boost the collections for the needy families, she said.
