Letter to the editor:

More guns add risk for police, civilians

Is there any other job other than police officer which requires you to wear a bulletproof vest while at work in this town? How about a job that makes you a target when you put on that badge?

We have everyone and his brother walking around with weapons in their cars, on their hips or anywhere you can imagine. As an officer of the law, you never know if the next encounter may be your last one. You have only a second to find out. He who hesitates is lost.

I spent a lot of years on a Midwest suburban police department. I understood that when a person turns on you, your life is at risk.

There is an old police saying, “Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.” Police officers also read the news. They see all the stories about the police shootings. Remember that when you pack that weapon.
