Couple rescued from burning house in North Las Vegas

A neighbor and a North Las Vegas police officer helped rescue a couple from their burning home early Tuesday morning, officials said.

North Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Cedric Williams said firefighters arrived shortly after 3:45 a.m. Tuesday to 6021 Star Point Court, near Tropical Parkway and Lawrence Street.

Smoke detectors awoke a female resident at the house, who heard a popping sound and saw smoke coming from a back room of the single-story home, Williams said.

The woman attempted to douse the flames with water, but the blaze continued to grow, he said.

She called 911 and tried to evacuate her husband, who uses a wheelchair, Williams said. As she struggled to get him out, an unidentified neighbor and a North Las Vegas police officer saw the fire, went into the home and helped the couple get out, he said.

Firefighters reported six- to eight-foot flames shooting from the house when they got there, Williams said.

“The fire just really took off,” he said.

Fire investigators deemed the blaze electrical in nature. The fire gutted the home, Williams said.
