Gasoline prices dropping across state, AAA reports

After several months of increases, gas prices in Nevada are starting to fall in advance of the winter months, according to data released Tuesday by the AAA auto club.

Statewide, the average price of a gallon of gasoline decreased 25 cents from last month to $3.68, which is still a nine-cent increase compared to this time last year.

Nevada’s prices are still slightly higher than the $3.44 per gallon national average, which has dropped 38 cents since last month, two cents higher compared to last year.

Reduced demand, lower crude oil prices and a switch from summer to winter fuel blends all contributed to the drop in prices, AAA said.

“With continued signs of global economic weakness and a somewhat strong U.S. dollar, crude oil prices should continue to move lower,” AAA Nevada spokeswoman Cynthia Harris said in a statement.

In Las Vegas, the average price of fuel dropped by 25 cents compared to last month to $3.65 per gallon.

Gas costs an average of $3.66 in Henderson, a 12-cent decrease, and $3.63 in North Las Vegas, which has the lowest price of any metro area in the state.

Elko has the highest pump prices in the state, with an average cost of $3.90 per gallon. Several cities in the northern part of the state saw sharp decreases in fuel prices after a fire at a California refinery last month sent prices in the area soaring.

In Reno, the average price was $3.72 per gallon, a 52-cent decrease, and in Carson City the price was $3.69, a 53-cent increase.

The lowest gas prices in the country can be found in Missouri, where a gallon of fuel costs an average of $3.10 per gallon. New York, where gas costs an average of $3.99 per gallon, has the highest prices in the 48 contiguous states.
