Political ads make it seem like once elected, our president just hands out money hand over fist, and depending on the party one favors, his judgment is either really good or very bad. But how many of the people who jump all over one candidate or the other actually know how the budget comes about?

Based on the input of the federal agencies, the president’s budget proposal projects estimated spending, revenue and borrowing levels broken down by functional categories for the fiscal year to start Oct. 1.

The president’s budget proposal serves as a starting point for Congress to consider.

Congress is under no obligation to adopt all or any of the president’s budget and often makes significant changes.

Congress works on its own to put together the federal budget. The president can pass or veto the budget but can’t veto a line item.

When the president does approve the budget, it is the budget put together by Congress.

It surprises me in this day and age that in our divided America, I don’t hear anyone blaming Congress for what they do and don’t do.

Those people with the energy to blame, bash and criticize should do some pure research and find out how their elected representatives have executed their jobs to help or hinder the mess we are in.
