Newmont worker dies in accident at Nevada gold mine

Federal mining safety regulators are investigating the death of a long-time worker at an underground gold mine in northeast Nevada.

Officials for the Newmont Mining Corp. confirmed that 49-year-old Allen Campbell of Spring Creek died in the accident about 2 p.m. Friday at their Exodus mine 25 miles north of Carlin.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration reported a worker slipped or fell to his death at the mine on Friday but has released no other details.

Newmont regional Vice President Tom Kerr Sr. says they are saddened by the tragic loss of a longtime friend and colleague.

Campbell started working for the Denver-based company in surfacing mining in 1988 and transferred to underground operations in 2001. He's survived by his wife, Julie, and two children.
