Clinton, Obama set aside rivalry with speech

Bill Clinton Speaks at the Paris

Former President Bill Clinton at the Paris on Oct. 12, 2010.

Bill Clinton's speech on behalf of President Barack Obama at the Democratic convention will be a key step on the path toward reconciliation for two former rivals.

It would have seemed unfathomable in 2008 that Obama would choose Clinton for such a high-profile assignment and that Clinton would accept.

The two men clashed bitterly that year as Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton battled for the Democratic nomination. While Hillary Clinton now serves as Obama's secretary of state, resentments between the current and former presidents have been slow to ebb.

But now, with Obama locked in a tight race with Republican Mitt Romney, Obama has fully embraced Clinton as a political partner in hopes of capturing the former president's uncanny knack for political survival against tough odds.
