Garage fire causes $20,000 damage

Garage fire

A fire this morning at a residential garage in the northeast valley caused an estimated $20,000 in damages, a Las Vegas Fire & Rescue official reports.

Firefighters responded about 5 a.m. to the fire at 605 Wyatt Ave., near H Street and West Owens Avenue, department spokesman Tim Szymanski said. A female woke up to popping sounds and believed someone was trying to break into the home, Szymanski said.

However, when the woman looked outside, she noticed flames. The woman, her daughter and two dogs all evacuated safely through the front door.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire but put out the fire in three minutes, Szymanski said. Damage was confined to the detached garage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
