It appears in her Wednesday letter (“Saving Medicare should be a priority”) that Maria Linton has fallen for the propaganda claiming that Social Security is financially solvent, is fully funded for the next 25 years and has not, as she says, “contributed one cent to our national debt.” I see the truth a little differently.

The Baby Boomers have only begun to retire, and Social Security is already running a deficit. Since our friends in Washington spent all the money in the trust fund, that money must be paid from the Treasury to cover the shortfall, adding directly to the debt.

Social Security is a big component of the looming debt crisis, and a fix must be implemented now, not 25 years from now. We can’t afford to continue sweeping the problem under the rug.
