Student found dead at Las Vegas magnet high school

A high school student was found dead Thursday on the East Career and Technical Academy campus, Clark County School District officials said.

The student was a senior at the Las Vegas magnet school at 6705 Vegas Valley Drive and has been in the district since elementary school. The district’s crisis response team was at the campus Thursday and Friday offering counseling to students and staff who were impacted by the loss, officials said.

“This tragedy serves as a reminder for our entire community to watch for signs of distress in our young people,” said School District spokeswoman Amanda Fulkerson in a statement.

This isn’t the first time a person was discovered dead in a district school. A 58-year-old Western High School teacher shot and killed himself outside the school in November 2010.

Metro Police is investigating the death of the student. The Clark County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the student and a cause of death after next of kin have been notified.
