Student’s death at magnet school is ruled a suicide

The high school student found dead Thursday at East Career and Technical Academy had hanged himself, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

The 18-year-old Las Vegas magnet school student’s death was ruled a suicide, the coroner’s office said.

Metro Police officers discovered the student’s body around 12:15 a.m. during a search of the school following up on a call from earlier that night, police said. The student was a senior and had attended Clark County School District schools since elementary school.

The district’s crisis response team offered counseling to students and staff who were impacted by the loss on Thursday and Friday, district officials said.

The student isn’t the first person to commit suicide in a district school. A 58-year-old Western High School teacher shot and killed himself outside the school in November 2010.
