One man injured, one under arrest in 2-vehicle crash that shuts down U.S. 95

A two-vehicle crash that closed part of U.S. 95 for three hours this morning left one man in critical condition and another under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.

The accident was reported at 5:12 a.m. near the off-ramp to Tropicana Avenue, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Jeremie Elliott said.

A man was changing a flat tire on his pickup truck on the shoulder of the highway when another pickup veered onto the shoulder and hit the first vehicle, Elliott said. The man changing the tire was transported to University Medical Center in critical condition, he said.

The driver of the other truck was uninjured and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, Elliott said.

No names were immediately released.

Debris from the accident forced the closure of all three lanes of southbound U.S. 95 in the area for about three hours, he said. A Las Vegas Fire & Rescue team was dispatched to put out a small fire, Elliott said.

Two lanes of the highway opened up about 7:45 a.m., and troopers were working to open the other closed lane, Elliott said.
