Nevada unemployment rate falls to 9.5 percent in July

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s jobless rate inched down to 9.5 percent in July compared to 9.6 percent in June, but the state’s rate remains higher than the national average.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported today there were an estimated 130,900 jobless in July, or 1,500 fewer than the previous month.

The national rate was 7.4 percent.

Clark County’s rate fell from 10.1 percent in June to 9.7 in July, led by strong showings in professional and business services and in the leisure and hospitality sector.

The number of unemployed in Clark County fell from 100,100 in June to 95,800 in July.

Gov. Brian Sandoval said the number of jobs in Nevada has increased by 22,000 in the first seven months of the year. The trend “points toward stable and modest growth,” he said.

Since January, the statewide unemployment rate has hovered between 9.5 and 9.7 percent.

The jobless rate declined in Washoe County from 9.8 percent in June to 9.3 percent in July, and Carson City’s rate fell to 9.5 percent, down from the 10.1 percent in June.
