A girls basketball coach at Lied Middle School has been charged with two counts of open and gross lewdness.

Alphonso Washington, 47, appeared Tuesday in Las Vegas Justice Court, where he was arrested and transported to the Clark County Detention Center. He remains in custody, according to jail records.

In May, detectives opened an investigation into allegations of open and gross lewdness committed by a teacher at Lied Middle School, Metro Police said.

Detectives identified Washington, a Henderson resident, as the suspect in the crime, police said.

The Clark County School District placed Washington on paid administrative leave when police opened the investigation, school spokeswoman Melinda Malone said. Washington has not been on a school campus since then, she said.

The school district hired Washington in January 2003, Malone said. He most recently worked as a special education teacher at Lied Middle School.

The Clark County District Attorney's Office filed the charges Aug. 20, officials said. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 10.
