Elderly man tells police burglars in his house, opens fire

One man found dead in backyard, second taken into custody

A 72-year-old man who called police to say his house was being burglarized grabbed a handgun and fired when the intruders tried to enter his bedroom, Metro Police said. One man was found dead in the backyard and another was taken into custody, police said.

About 7:50 a.m., Metro Police received a call from the man indicating burglars had entered his home at the 2300 block of Westwind Road in northwest Las Vegas. Police said the man retreated to his bedroom and retrieved a handgun.

When the men attempted to enter, the homeowner fired at least one shot, causing the suspects to flee, police said.

As he was trying to escape, one suspect slammed his vehicle into an arriving squad car and was taken into custody, police said.

During the confusion, police said, a second man escaped on foot. When police searched the backyard, they found a third man, dead from an apparent gunshot wound. Police said a handgun also was found in the backyard.

The investigation is ongoing, and no charges are expected to be brought against the homeowner, police said.

Police said the man had been the victim of a previous burglary within about the past month.
