Man to face charges in triple shooting, police say

A man authorities allege shot and killed three people and a dog Tuesday at his home before shooting himself will be arrested and booked in absentia while he recovers, Metro Police said.

James McCarty, 54, is in critical condition at University Medical Center for what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police said. He will be booked on three counts of murder with a deadly weapon, police said.

Police were alerted to the shooting about 4:20 p.m. inside a home in the 2200 block of La Sombra Street. When officers arrived, they discovered a pool of blood on the back patio and two women, a man and a dog dead inside the home, along with McCarty, who was wounded, police said.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office has identified two of the victims as Bonnie Lee Scherrer, 38, of Las Vegas, and her brother Robert John Scherrer, 41, of Las Vegas.

They have not released the identity of the other victim.

McCarty’s neighbor, Josie Montgomery, said all four people involved in the shooting were related and lived in the house. Scherrer was McCarty’s step-daughter, he said.
