All those involved with the project participate in a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction project to reopen F Street on Monday, May 6, 2013 near downtown Las Vegas.

A portion of D Street south of the Interstate 15 offramp will be closed until next Wednesday as part of a project to reopen the F Street underpass.

Crews will remove islands in the road to create a straightforward commute on D Street, closing the portion of the road that stretches from Bonanza Road to the I-15 offramp, the Nevada Department of Transportation announced.

This closure is the first of several construction projects in the surrounding area to reopen the F Street underpass, which was closed in 2008, NDOT spokesman Damon Hodge said. Another construction project to build the underpass will cause lane closures on I-15 from July to December, he said.

NDOT advises motorists to use detours such as the F-D Street Connector, H Street and Main Street. The F-D Street Connector will be limited to one lane each way during the closure.

The F Street underpass project started after a 2009 bill in the Nevada Legislature directing the city of Las Vegas and NDOT to reopen the underpass was approved. The project should be completed by the end of 2014, Damon said.
